Albert Warren Tillinghast was one of the giants of American golf course architecture, responsible for some of the most revered championship venues in the country. A Philadelphia native, he traveled to Scotland as a young man and was inspired by Old Tom Morris before returning to build courses that balanced beauty with rigorous shot values.
Design Philosophy
Tillinghast believed every hole should be a demanding par and a comfortable bogey. His designs feature bold, strategic bunkering, ingenious green contours, and a relentless insistence on quality over quantity. He famously said, 'A round of golf should provide 18 inspirations.'
